As has been the case for most of this year on a Thursday, Epic has unlocked this week’s free games available to all users through the Epic Game Store for no cost. This week includes horror-thriller Layers of Fear, and first-person puzzle game Q.U.B.E 2.

Layers of Fear initially released in 2016, and it was a weird, psychedelic, scary, and beautiful game all at the same time. Critics gave it a positive reception. The Victorian setting and emphasis on exploration set it apart from the usual popcorn style horror game. If you’re looking for something to tackle this coming Halloween, you need to look no further. This version is the Masterpiece Edition, which comes with the Inheritance DLC bundled in for good measure.

Q.U.B.E 2 is a different kind of game. A first-person puzzle game that launched last year with a similarly warm reception, with several excellent puzzles and a familiarity to it to Valve classic Portal. It’s smart and requires patience and cunning. It’s well worth your time.

Both Layers of Fear and Q.U.B.E 2 are available to add to your library for free until October 31.

Epic also confirmed the two games which will be available next week for free. More horror goodness on Halloween as the critically acclaimed SOMA by Frictional Games, creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Punumbra series, and Costume Quest from legendary developer Tim Schafer and Double Fine Productions, come to the store straight after this week’s offering. Like this week, that’s a hell of a freebie for the scariest night of the year.
