Sometimes big-name actors can wiggle their way into small parts that can go over the audience’s heads. Laura Dern did that with season 2 of The White Lotus in a cameo that featured a voice role for her. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she shares what led to this small role for such a big star.

The scene in question circles around one of the leading characters, Dominic Di Grasso (Michael Imperioli). He is on vacation with his son, Albie (Adam DiMarco), and his father, Bert (F. Murray Abraham). When he checks into his room, he calls his ex-wife Abby, who surprised White Lotus fans by being voiced by Laura Dern. In their conversation, it goes pretty bad for Dominic as she rips him apart for his affairs that have split their marriage, torn up his relationship with his daughter, and led to the two women not coming with the boys on their trip to Italy. What led to this appearance was a previous involvement between the Jurassic Park star and creator of the hit HBO series, Mike White.

“I just love his brain [White] and so all he had to do was ask and I was happy to be part of it,” she said after they worked together on the 2011 comedy-drama Enlightened.

Laura Dern and the White Lotus creator hit it off 11 years ago on Enlightened, which followed a woman having a breakdown as she caused chaos everywhere she went. She called him “incredible” and his latest HBO series “brilliant.” Being friends, colleagues, and a fan of one another’s work led to this collaboration. When it comes to a possible return to working together, and possibly bigger than a voice part in a single scene, she teased that she “wouldn’t be surprised” to “find our way to each other.”

The White Lotus season 2 is currently airing on HBO and streaming on HBO Max every Sunday at 9:30 ET.
