Last Week Tonight With John Oliver has been renewed for an additional three seasons by HBO, meaning the show will go on through at least 2023. Despite Oliver’s attacks and provocations against HBO’s parent company, AT&T, which Oliver refers to as “Business Daddy,” the company is keeping him around.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver Has Been Renewed

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver first aired in 2014 and is currently in its seventh season. Throughout those seasons, the show has put out more than 200 episodes. Last Week Tonight With John Oliver takes the form of a late-night talk show, but, as the name implies, focuses on recent events. The show often sets aside a large amount of airtime for a singular topic. The often serious topics are made more lighthearted by the satire and jokes made throughout the show. Before Last Week Tonight With John Oliver was renewed through 2023, the seventh season was the last one set to air, having been the final season agreed to during the show’s 2017 renewal contract.

Due to coronavirus, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver has had to ditch the audience this season. Like other late-night shows that have had to do the same, the adjustment took some getting used to (of course, some new talk shows have thrived because of this change). Oliver has done an excellent job of keeping the show entertaining and informative despite the change.

The seventh season of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver is currently on hiatus until Sept. 27, when it will continue airing on HBO on Sundays. The show has won numerous awards during its time on air. These include a Critic’s Choice Television Award, a Dorian Award, and multiple GLAAD Media Awards, Peabody Awards, Emmy Awards, Producer Guild of America Awards, and more.
