The Bomberman franchise was once a favorite multiplayer option for many games, but the series has definitely fallen in grace over the years. With the movement of Konami away from console gaming, we were pleasantly surprised by the announcement of Super Bomberman R at the Nintendo Switch reveal presentation last month, and now we finally know what the R in the name stands for.
Hudson Soft used to own the rights to Bomberman, but Konami acquired those rights a number of years ago. They have essentially done nothing with the property outside of a few mobile releases, but now the series has returned in true fashion with Super Bomberman R exclusively for the Switch.
Since the reveal of the game, people have been wondering what exactly the R in the title of the game stood for, which we now know. Konami revealed this information through their KonamiUSSocial account on Reddit via the Bomberman subreddit after someone asked that very question.
“Hello!
R is a throw back feel for the Devs. to when games could simply have a letter and allow that letter to carry many meanings.
It symbolized Returns & Reborn because this game is such a homage to SNES and SB3.
But it also mean Rangers, to represent the diverse and colorful group of Bomberman characters who patrol the galaxy.”
This explanation definitely makes sense, though you have to wonder if part of it was just come up with after the fact because people were just asking or if this three pronged answer was always the case.
Super Bomberman R will be releasing as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch on March 3, which is supposedly going to retail for $49.99. This was put up on the Konami website after the first retail listings had it for $59.99. We will have to wait and see if this is a faithful follow-up that is worth the asking cost at that point, because we really have no idea for now.
