Hideo Kojima is striving for photorealism in Metal Gear Solid V, and a batch of recently released environment screenshots for the game show that they’re pretty close. However, Kojima notes that with Snake not in the picture, the level of quality he’s looking for is there, “but once Snake comes into that frame, such reality gets lost,” the legendary developer of the Metal Gear franchise explained via Twitter.

The screenshots, which can be found below, were taken of just the environments of the Fox Engine, and Kojima says that getting Snake to match with the realism in the environments is currently his “headache”.

Metal Gear Solid V is still very much a mystery. We know that Metal Gear fans will be getting two games in relatively short order. Metal Gear Solid V will be broken into two games. The first will be Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, which is a prologue to Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain. Both are expected to arrive in 2014 on next-gen consoles, current-gen consoles, and PC.
