Marvel Comics enlists Tini Howard (Excalibur, Empyre: X-Men) to pen Knights of X. Robert Quinn illustrates and brings this title to life with some of the most popular names in X-Men history. Knights of X features Betsy Braddock, Gambit, and other established mutants who were chosen to traverse the mystical realm of Otherworld. They’re split into two groups: One to save Jim Jaspers, a reality-warping mutant from England about to be executed, and the other to retrieve “the Holy Grail of mutantkind.” Behind the persecution in Otherworld is the diabolical Merlyn and King Arthur, along with their legion of Furies. Furies the size of sentinels. Unfortunately, casualties are inevitable in a time of war.
Knights Of X And Death
Persecution and death haunt mutantkind in all planes of reality. Even in Otherworld, where magic exists in the open, they’re hunted and executed. Known as the “witchbreed,” mutants must defend themselves from the malicious wizard Merlyn and his machinations. While Betsy and her group are off tracking down the Siege Perilous, an ancient artifact important to mutants, Gambit takes his team to rescue former British Prime Minister Jim Jaspers. All hope of saving Mad Jim seems lost when Merlyn arrives on the scene to stop the Knights of X.
Meanwhile, Gambit is all too sure of himself. The wizard and mutant clash with a little magic from the Starlight Citadel stored in his back pocket. Unfortunately, things don’t end well for the Cajun.
The final panel shows the Knights of X watching in fear as Gambit lays in a pool of blood while his hand grips the tarot card for death. Merlyn’s magic seems too powerful for the gambling mutant in Knights of X #3, but it is always possible this is not the end for him. As Gambit stated in a previous panel: “I been death!” He may very well be capable of cheating death again. Resurrections exist, too.
