To the dismay of all Star Wars and Knights of the Old Republic fans that had been looking forward to the KOTOR remake, the game has been delayed indefinitely.

The original game by Bioware came out in 2003 and took Star Wars in a direction it had never seen before. With the enthralling narrative coupled with complex characters and environments, the game was truly ahead of its time. No other game in the Star Wars universe has garnered as dedicated a fanbase as KOTOR.

But the Austin, Texas-based video game developer, Aspyr Media, recently announced that the game would be delayed indefinitely until the team can determine the future direction of the title. The company suddenly fired both the art and the design directors last month, signaling internal struggles that the Knights of the Old Republic is going through.

A report from Bloomberg revealed that Aspyr Media had readied a vertical slice of KOTOR to show both Lucasfilm and Sony. The team was happy with the demo they had made and were positive about the direction of the remake. Still, apparently, the demo was not received well internally and wasn’t up to the expected quality. The report also mentioned the development being unsustainable, with costs and time being primary problems.

The game is likely stuck in development hell, and the release may have been delayed by a long time. Initially meant to launch later this year, the new expected release window is 2025.

The KOTOR Delay Might Be Good For Star Wars Fans

The Knights of the Old Republic remake could have been dead at launch if it had kept the trajectory it was headed towards. This delay could mean that Sony is ensuring that the game’s quality is not compromised for the sake of a timely release.

While no one like long delays when it comes to their favorite games, sometimes delays are necessary, and developers being more honest with their fans is a good thing.

In the meantime, there are other Star Wars games on the horizon to look forward to, like Jedi Survivor. Albeit not a remake of a classic, the first game, Jedi Fallen Order, was well received by fans and critics alike.
