Confirming Toho’s Friday projections, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film has reached one million ticket sales on the first day. The cast first announced the film’s projections during the opening-day stage greetings. Along with this, the movie has earned over 10 billion yen (about $87 million) in its entire run so far.

Since its release, about 15,000 people have gone the see the film in Japan. TOHO originally planned to screen the film with only 28 screens in 14 theaters, but soon expanded when demand outweighed supply. This was first seen when tickets sold out on the first day in simply two minutes.

The historic goal for the Jujutsu Kaisen film came from both the midnight screenings early morning and afternoon shows. Early box offices for that day conclude that the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie will have the second biggest opening day in Japan, behind Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train. With both of these movies, midnight showings are not counted.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Prequel to a Popular Story

The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film is based on Gege Akutami’s Jujitsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School manga prequel. Studio Mappa will be animating with TOHO behind the distribution. With this film’s release, Jujitsu Kaisen 0 has received a novel adaptation that was released on December 24.

Akutami launched the original story of Jujitsu Kaisen in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 2018. Since then, Jujitsu Kaisen has had over 60 million copies in circulation. Most recently, the studio has hinted multiple times that a second season for the highly acclaimed animated series is in the works. If the announcement does in the upcoming, the season will be expected to come in late 2022 or early 2023.

Since Jujutsu Kaisen 0, only one film has been able to break the 10 million yen milestone. That film was Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time. The Evangelion film became the highest-grossing movie of the year in Japan.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is only available in Japanese theaters. However, international fans can expect an official release in theaters around June of 2022.
