Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is already a box office smash in Japan and maintained its number 1 spot at the box office for over two weeks. As of January 24th, the movie has sold over 6.81 million tickets and has grossed over 9.3 billion yen. The anime film is based on the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga, a prequel to the hit anime series Jujutsu Kaisen. The official synopsis is as follows: “When they were children, Rika Orimoto was killed in a traffic accident right before the eyes of her close friend, Yuta Okkotsu.

“It’s a promise. When we both grow up, we’ll get married.”

Rika became an apparition, and Yuta longed for his own death after suffering under her curse, but the greatest Jujutsu sorcerer, Satoru Gojo, welcomed him into Jujutsu High. Yuta meets his classmates, Maki Zen’in, Toge Inumaki, and Panda, and finally finds his determination.

“I want the confidence to say it’s okay that I’m alive!”

“While I’m at Jujutsu High, I’ll break Rika-chan’s curse.”

Meanwhile, the vile curse user, Suguru Geto, who was expelled from the school for massacring ordinary people, appears before Yuta and the others.

“This coming December 24th, we shall carry out the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons.”

While Geto advocates for creating a paradise for only jujutsu sorcerers, he unleashes a thousand curses upon Shinjuku and Kyoto to exterminate all non-sorcerers. Will Yuta be able to stop Geto in the end? And what will happen to breaking Rika’s curse…?

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is directed by Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sunghoo Park and produced by MAPPA. Crunchyroll is distributing the anime film in association with Funimation. Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen will recognize the cast of Yuichi Nakamura as Satoru Gojo, Takahiro Sakurai as Suguru Geto, Tomokazu Seki as Panda, Mikako Komatsu as Maki Zen’in, and Koki Uchiyama as Toge Inumaki. The movie’s protagonist Yuta Okkotsu is voiced by actress Megumi Ogata, who appears in the 2021 Japanese box office smash Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is one of many anime films to make its way to U.S. theaters in recent history. Just last year, U.S. fans of the Japanese art style were treated to Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, Gintama: The Very Final, Macross Plus Movie Edition, Promare, and Shirobako The Movie. I can’t recall a time when seeing anime in movie theaters was common. I’m happy to see that anime is finding international success and is carving its own lane in U.S. pop culture.

Tickets for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 go on sale on February 25th. Until the film’s release date in March, you can stream episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen now on Crunchyroll.
