The new Fantastic Four reboot has come out this week and critical reviews have been very sour. The movie’s director responded on Twitter that the final film is not the version he envisioned.

Heroic Hollywood captured a tweet that Josh Trank wrote earlier today responding to the scathing reviews that movie received. The tweet has since been deleted, but it gives us a reason why the movie wasn’t constructed very well.

Josh Trank said: “A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would’ve received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though“.

If you go on Rotten Tomatoes right now, 93 critics have reviewed Fantastic Four already and only 9% of them like it. You cannot blame the superhero/comic book genre for this either.

20th Century Fox’s X Men: Days of Future Past received stellar reviews last year and this is from the same studio that made Fantastic Four. Why they couldn’t make an equally good movie with Fantastic Four is anyone’s guess. Marvel Studios also makes a ton of money from its movies and most of them are received well by critics and fans.

Fantastic Four may have hurt the career of Josh Trank. He was set to direct one of the Star Wars spin-off films, but pulled out. 20th Century Fox has already announced a sequel to the movie that is supposed to be out in 2017. However the poor reviews for the first film might mean this sequel is getting cancelled.

Even the earlier films of the franchise directed by Tim Story have a better Rotten Tomatoes rating, and those films weren’t great to begin with either. The first film in 2005 has a 27% rating with 2007’s Rise of the Silver Surfer getting a 37% rating.

It would be interesting to see if 20th Century Fox ever decides to release the “true” version of Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four movie. Fans eventually got to see the Richard Donner version of Superman II 26 years after the first version came out…
