In celebration of The Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Sony Pictures Animation had a presentation to kick up excitement for next year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. In a thread of tweets with all sorts of casting announcements, we got word that The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone joins the Spider-Man cast as an “anachronistic version” of the villain The Vulture.

The thread of tweets said that a clip was shown (not seen in the tweets) to audiences at the festival. It showed Jorma Taccone as The Vulture in Gwen Stacy’s (Hailee Steinfeld) universe. The clip also features Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 and a pregnant Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, played by Issa Rae (Insecure).

In that Across the #SpiderVerse clip we saw: An anachronistic version of The Vulture (voiced by @jormataccone), our old friend Spider-Man 2099 (voiced by Oscar Isaac), and the incomparable (and pregnant!) Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman (voiced by @issarae). #AnnecyFestival

Adrian Toomes, The Vulture, debuted in the comics in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #2 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. He is a genius who engineered a suit for him to fly. Over the decades, he has seen some different roles while always being a bad guy. He is notably a central member of the Sinister Six, a group of iconic villains out to get the wallcrawling hero. The last film to bring the supervillain to life was Spider-Man: Homecoming, with Michael Keaton facing off against Tom Holland’s web-slinger. The character was also seen in the PlayStation 4 game, Marvel’s Spider-Man, with Dwight Schultz (Star Trek: First Contact) voicing the character. Now, Jorma Taccone will play the Spider-Man antagonist.

Going beyond the Spider-Man Universe with Jorma Taccone

Besides starring in an upcoming Spider-Man movie, Jorma Taccone has had a long, successful career. He is one-third of The Lonely Island. In addition, he won an Emmy for his writing contributions to SNL, along with other nominations for SNL and his time on PEN15 as an executive producer.

He has quite a few projects in the works. For acting, he will star in Kung Fury 2 and The People We Hate at the Wedding. For behind-the-camera gigs, he will direct and pen MacGruber 2 with co-writer and leading star Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth).

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse aimed for an October release but was delayed to June 2nd, 2023.
