Jorge R Gutiérrez is bringing his creativity to full bear with Maya and the Three. The creative force behind The Book of Life is teaming up with Netflix to bring ancient legends to life. It is set to debut on October 22, 2021.

“By the power of Grey…By the power of three! Power of three, yeah.”

Maya and the Three stars Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy), Hailey Hermida (Anonymous Killers), Carolina Ravassa (Overwatch), Carlos Alazraqui (Fairly Odd Parents), Eric Bauza (Space Jam: A New Legacy), Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99), Joaquín Cosion (Quantum of Solace), Kate del Castillo (Book of Life), Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle), Gabriel Iglesias, Wyclef Jean, Diego Luna (Rogue One), Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), Cheech Marin (Cheech and Chong), and Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold).

Netflix, Maya Entertainment, Mexopolis, Netflix Animation, and Tangent Animation are the production companies. Jorge R Gutiérrez directs and shares writing credits. The other credited writers are Silvia Cardenas Olivas, Candie Langdal, and Doug Langdale. Jorge R Gutiérrez is best known for his work on The Book of Life and Son of Jaguar.

Maya and the Three looks to be a delightful story that will explore new grounds in mythology. Rather than rehashing the same Greek and Norse characters that have become so popular, audiences will have the chance to learn a new mythos and fall in love with a new cast of heroes and villains. The animation pops and there’s an all-star cast providing voices. While it appears to have easily been able to stand as a movie in theaters, this nine-part series will allow viewers to more fully dive into this fascinating world.
