Superman and Lois returned tonight with a significant Bizarro World twist, and Jordan Elsass talked about that twist to Entertainment Weekly. Not too long ago, we made our predictions regarding Elsass’s Jon Kent on the show, and while many of those predictions reigned true, few were expecting Bizarro Jon Kent to be a villain who is aiding the dangerous Ally Allston (Rya Kihlstedt) in her attempts to merge with her other self in the world we’ve been watching. Elsass himself discussed being taken aback by the experience, particularly when he first saw the suit. “It’s not that I wasn’t a fan; it’s just that when I first saw the outfit, I don’t believe I’d actually read the script yet,” Elsass said. “And once I actually read the script, it started to click pretty quickly… But it took me a little while to get used to that hair and that outfit and everything. That was funky.” This outfit, reminiscent of a Superboy suit from the 1993 comics, consists of a leather jacket, red pants, a t-shirt with the S-Shield, guyliner, and an emo hairstyle.

Jordan Elsass on The Bizarro World Twist

In the Bizarro World, where these grungy looks are common, it is revealed that Jon and his dad (Tyler Hoechlin), who goes by Kal-El with no Clark Kent identity, have a strained relationship due to Kal-El being caught up in the fame of being a super-hero. Once Jon manifests powers, Kal gives him the name Jon-El and brings him along as an aide. But sick of playing second banana, Jon is deceived by Ally Allston and starts working with her to cross universes and merge with their other selves. This Jon is much more violent and vindictive than his counterpart, and he has no sadness upon learning of his father’s death in Superman’s world. After obtaining Allston’s pendants, he crosses into that world to merge with his “other self.” And chances are he’s not going to take no for an answer.

Elsass said he was excited but surprised by the challenge regarding having powers. “It’s a hell of a workout, I’ll tell you that. Being up on the wires and stuff, it’s a lot of core. I had to be doing chin-ups. Those [harnesses] are not easy.” And regarding playing a villain, Elsass said he was inspired by Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight, which is a role he has said is a dream role.

What Does This Twist Mean for “Superman and Lois’?

Tensions between Bizarro Jon and his dad sent him to a dark place. Things between Jon and Clark have been tense since Jon was caught with X-Kryptonite. Next week’s episode features Jon venting about Clark lying to him about who he was for 14 years. Is the tension between Jon and Clark sending Jon down another dark spiral? We’ll find more on next Tuesday’s new episode of Superman and Lois.
