Jonathan Bing, Netflix’s director of communications, has announced today that he will be leaving his current position at Netflix to accept a job as the chief communications officer at Vice Media Group. Bing has served as Director of Studio Communications at Netflix since April 2019, before which he was Senior Vice President of Communications for Fox Network Group.
In his new role as chief communications officer for Vice Media, Jonathan Bing will reportedly be responsible for leading and managing the communication between all of Vice Media Group’s brands, including Vice News, Vice TV, Vice Studios, and Refinery 29. Based out of Los Angeles, California, Bing’s new role will see him updating and streamlining Vice Media’s communication strategies “to reflect and deliver against the new ambitions for the business,” Variety reports.
Why Jonathan Bing left Netflix – and what’s next
Jonathan Bing’s departure from Netflix comes at a time when the streaming service’s finances are at a low point; according to BusinessNews, Netflix has had to lay off over 100 employees as it deals with “its first quarterly subscriber loss in a decade.” Though the exact circumstances of Bing’s departure are currently unknown, the former Netflix executive has only good things to say about his new role.
“Vice has an incredibly impressive track record of creating fearless and authentic, original content for a young, diverse, global audience which the rest of the media finds hard to reach,” he told Deadline. “I am excited to be taking on this role at VMG and look forward to working with Nancy [Dubuc] and her amazing team to help them achieve their next level of growth and success.”
Nancy Dubuc, CEO of Vice Media Group, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Jon to VMG. Jon’s global communications knowledge will be an asset for us at VMG, and his well-rounded knowledge of news, film, television, and culture will directly and positively impact our business as we continue to grow and reach new milestones.”
Further information regarding Jonathan Bing’s departure from Netflix has not yet been released, nor has any information on who will succeed him in his previous role.
