In a recent tweet, Fandom announced that Johnny Depp has been cast to play King Louis XV in an untitled film directed by French director, writer, and actress Maïwenn. The untitled King Louis XV project will be the sixth full-length film directed by Maïwenn, who sci-fi fans may recognize as the Diva from the 90s sci-fi classic The Fifth Element. Variety reports that the film will be produced by Pascal Caucheteux and Grégoire Sorlat’s Why Not Productions, the same studio behind 2013’s The Purge and Maïwenn’s most recent drama DNA. Director Maïwenn will also star as Jeanne du Barry, the last mistress of King Louis XV.

King Louis XV had the second-longest reign in French history, ruling over France from 1715 until he died in 1774. Historians often criticize Louis the Beloved’s controversial reign for being influenced by his many mistresses and weakening the royal government, which led to the French Revolution in 1789.

Johnny Depp Has Starred In Iconic Roles For Nearly Four Decades

Johnny Depp has played many iconic characters in his nearly four-decade-long career, including Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), Grindelwald (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street), Ichabod Crane (Sleepy Hollow), and Glen Lantz (Nightmare on Elm Street, his first-ever starring role). In addition to being an 80-time award-winning actor, Depp received high honors last year when two international film festivals paid tribute to his exemplary career. Europe’s San Sebastian film festival awarded Depp their most honorable Donostia award. One month prior, the Karlovy Vary international film festival honored Depp with a screening of his latest produced projects, Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan and Minamata .

Since Johnny Depp will be portraying a French King, I’m curious to see if Depp will speak French for the role which shouldn’t be a problem since Depp reportedly speaks French and currently resides in the French countryside with his family. The actor has stated in the past that he loves living in France and has huge respect for their laid-back lifestyle. Depp was once quoted saying, “Living in France is the first time I can honestly say I feel at home.”
