Even after being the first streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, Apple TV+ is showing no signs of slowing down its growth. To keep expanding, Apple TV+ has ordered a nine-episode series based on James Crouch’s sci-fi novel, Dark Matter. According to a new report from Deadline, actor Joel Edgerton is set to star in, and executive produce Apple TV+’s Dark Matter series. Crouch will also serve as an executive producer as well as the series’ writer and showrunner.
Dark Matter is considered by many to be one of the greatest sci-fi novels of the decade, which is one of the main reasons why the series has been in development at Apple since 2020. The story follows Jason Dessen, who will be played by Joel Edgerton in the Dark Matter series. Dessen is a physicist, professor, and family man. One night, while walking home, he is abducted into an alternate version of his life. At first, Dessen is amazed. However, he is quickly horrified by the potential of the multiverse. This leads Dessen to embark on a quest to return home to his true life and family and save them from an alternate version of himself.
Joining Joel Edgerton and Blake Crouch for the Dark Matter series are Matt Tolmach, David Manpearl, and Louis Leterrier. Tolmach and Manpearl will serve as executive producers, and Leterrier will direct the first four episodes of the series. Leterrier has previously directed movies like Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk (2008), and the first two Transporter movies.
Who is Joel Edgerton?
Australian actor and filmmaker Joel Edgerton has appeared or starred in dozens of projects throughout the course of his career, including Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby, The Underground Railroad, and The Gift, which he also wrote and directed. He notably stars as the younger version of Luke Skywalker’s uncle, Owen Lars, in two of the prequel movies. However, Edgerton is reprising the role for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series.
