Joker, which just wrapped up filming last month, is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated movies of 2019.

According to the latest rumors, it looks like Joaquin Phoenix owned the role of the clown prince of crime. Justin Shanlian of the Shanlian on Batman podcast sent out this tweet complimenting Phoenix and the film:

Been told by many that #JoaquinPhoenix has crushed it as #TheJoker

The more I hear about this project the more EXCITED I get for it! You’re ALL in for a treat when this film is released in October! Heard that the script is incredible and they’ve nailed the character of #TheJoker pic.twitter.com/RysqRrFzY2

This is a promising sign for DC Comics as Joker has been a project met with a fairly mixed reception thus far. The first make-up test for the movie had some fans worried, as the character’s appearance fared more towards your typical clown and less of what we’ve come to expect from the terrifying villain. The first set video that was leaked a few days later gave relief to some of those doubts as we saw Phoenix in action as The Joker for the first time.

No matter how the character looks, most people have praised the decision to cast Joaquin Phoenix in the role. From what Shanlian said, it seems that Phoenix will indeed put on an impressive performance as the iconic villain.

Warner Bros. describes Joker as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.”. With the film wrapping production, it probably won’t be long before we receive our first official trailer for Joker.

DC Comics is ramping up for a fantastic 2019. With Aquaman still thriving at the box office, the DCEU sets its sights on its next project, Shazam!. After that, there’s a good chance that we will get our first looks at Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey. There’s also the conundrum around Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which is still without a main lead and is rumored to begin filming in November. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, we have Joker, which is set to hit theaters October 4th, 2019.
