Just when we thought the studios in Hollywood were running out of franchises to make movies about, they hit us with a sudden curveball. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer is producing a live-action movie for Paramount based on the Beyblade toy franchise. Writers Neil Widener and Gavin James are currently working on a script for the project — with no details available as of yet.
For those unaware, Beyblade toys are spinning tops. They were originally created by the Japanese firm Takara to be a rival of Pokemon. However, Beyblade toys have been licensed by other toy companies, including Hasbro. Despite being a rather simple concept, these spinning, battling top toys have inspired the creation of manga, anime, series of comics, and even TV programs.
Beyblade tops battle in an arena called a Beystadium. These stadiums are a lot like miniature colosseums. To prepare them for battle, opponents will use a BeyLauncher to give their Beyblade the spin and energy necessary to launch into battle.
Jerry Bruckheimer’s Beyblade movie is in early development for Paramount. The studio has seen prior success with other toy franchises, such as the Transformers movies as well as the G.I. Joe movies. Much like those franchises, Beyblade is a popular toy that has sold millions of units over the years.
Jerry Bruckheimer is one of the biggest producers in the American movie industry. Bruckheimer has served as a producer on dozens of movies, including the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, the Bad Boys movies, and other Michael Bay movies like Armageddon and Pearl Harbor. Bruckheimer’s latest projects as a producer include Top Gun: Maverick and Secret Headquarters, an action movie starring Owen Wilson.
