Jason Segel has been straying far from his comedic roots lately; his current project, Windfall, has him playing one of his darkest roles to date. The Netflix original Windfall is described as a “Hitchcockian thriller” and stars Jason Segel as the movie’s antagonist, a first for Segel. According to Netflix‘s official YouTube channel, Windfall is about a man who breaks into a billionaire’s vacation home and resorts to desperate measures when the tech mogul (Jesse Plemons) and his wife (Lily Collins) arrive unexpectedly. Segel will play the role of the robber, a poor man with a chip on his shoulder who thinks he can even the unfair odds life has dealt him by stealing from an arrogant billionaire.
The Netflix original thriller was co-written by director Charlie McDowell, Justin Lader, and Jason Segel, making Windfall the fifth project Segel wrote, starred, and produced. Windfall also stars Academy Award nominee Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog) and Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), who is also credited as producers. Windfall’s director Charlie McDowell has worked with Jason Segel in the past. The two have previously collaborated on the comedy short Bye Bye Benjamin, Netflix’s sci-fi romance The Discovery, and most recently on Segel’s 2020 AMC drama Dispatches From Elsewhere co-starring Eve Lindley, Andre 3000, Richard E. Grant, and Sally Field.
Dispatches From Elsewhere is the first tv series created by Jason Segel. Even with the show’s ten episodes wrapping two years ago, fans are still talking about how amazing, impactful, and eye-opening the series was. Segel has certainly come a long way from his light-hearted comedic roles in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I Love You Man, and the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother. He continues to show growth, range, and diversity with each new starring role. I can’t wait to see how he delivers in a more serious, villainous role.
