As they do every month, the NPD group has just released a list of the top-selling games and consoles for the month of January. The best selling game for January 2019 was Kingdom Hearts 3. This comes as a surprise as the title was only available for a mere 3 days during the month and had stiff competition. That competition includes the Resident Evil 2 Remake, which came in second place and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe came in third.

Kingdom Hearts 3 has unsurprisingly been a smash hit for developer Square Enix. The long-awaited title launched to mostly positive critical acclaim across the board. It has since gone on to have shipped 5 million units in its first week on the market. This is the strongest launch for the series since Kingdom Hearts 2 in 2006. Kingdom Hearts 3 has already sold two and a half more times than Kingdom Hearts 2 did in its first month on the market. Not too bad for a game that was the laughingstock of the gaming world for over a decade.

As for Resident Evil 2 Remake, it unsurprisingly kept it close with Kingdom Hearts 3 for the top spot. It sold over 2.8 more times than the original did back on the PS1, making it a rousing success. Not so shockingly, Resident Evil 2 was the highest selling game on Xbox One for the month. This makes sense as the Kingdom Hearts series has never made it’s way over to an Xbox console with all of its other entries currently being available to play on PlayStation 4.

As for console sales, Nintendo had another good month. The Nintendo Switch was the top-selling console for the month of January, keeping it’s long streak alive. Nintendo did move it’s expectations down for Switch sales following the last month, likely due to their overzealous expectations.
