With Harrison Ford set to return one last time as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones 5, the film’s director James Mangold has certainly had his hands full as rumors surrounding the new film abound on Twitter. Among rumors that Indy’s title would be passed onto Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mangold has also gone online and on record to deny that the crew for Indiana Jones 5 has re-shot any scenes or done any “alternate endings.”

With the first trailer for Indiana Jones 5 – formally titled Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – released earlier this month, fans of the Indiana Jones films are incredibly excited to ride along with Indy one last time as he comes out of retirement alongside his goddaughter, Helen, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Harrison Ford, now 80, appears in the trailer as Indiana Jones himself alongside a de-aged Indy in his prime, but even this evidence doesn’t seem to be enough for a certain sect of internet trolls, who are insistent that Ford can’t really be playing Indy and have come up with two theories to support their claim: the first being that Helen will be taking on her godfather’s role, and the second, more recent theory stating that James Mangold and the crew of Indiana Jones 5 must’ve done reshoots and filmed alternate endings for the film.

Regarding the first theory, Mangold published a tweet not long after the trailer’s release, denying that anyone would be taking over as Indy or “donning his hat”; furthermore, he also wasn’t being erased from the film through “some contrivance,” per Variety.

James Mangold Denies ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Trolls on Twitter

Despite Mangold putting the matter of Phoebe Waller-Bridge not taking over as Indiana Jones firmly to rest, the Twitter trolls aren’t satisfied. Despite Mangold taking a break from social media, they’ve returned with claims that the crew Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has had to shoot new scenes or “alternate endings.” According to Variety, this theory reportedly comes from the fact that the film is 99% finished with over six months to go until its June release date, leading fans to wonder what Mangold and the Indiana Jones 5 crew are doing with all that extra time.

So I took a b-day break from trolls. But it seems I gotta once again say.. We’re not shooting & never shot any new scenes or “alt endings”. Our film is 99% finished, getting rated by MPAA & VFX being completed. Happy Holidays!

Mangold also said that John Williams, the composer for Indiana Jones 5, was “mistaken” when speaking about reshooting and rescoring the end of the film. And answering another fan about the six-month gap in his schedule, Mangold told another fan that despite there being 6 months to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’s worldwide release, the post schedule for the film would be over in a few weeks, and Mangold himself is “digging into his next film.”

Indiana Jones 5, or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, directed by James Mangold, is currently slated for worldwide release on June 30th, 2023.
