James Corden is quitting the CBS series The Late Late Show after eight years. He is the fourth host of The Late Late Show series franchise. Tom Snyder was the first host, Craig Kilborn was the second, Craig Ferguson, and James Corden is the current host. Corden had his contract extended to 2023, but will call it quits just short of the summer of 2023. James Corden spoke to Deadline regarding his departure from the show, saying, “It’s been it’s a really hard decision to leave because I’m so immensely proud of the show.” His segments Carpool Karaoke, Drop the Mic, Spill Your Guts, and Crosswalk Musical brought audiences to the show after Ferguson’s departure. CBS executives like President and CEO George Cheeks and CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl were against James Corden quitting his hosting gig. They tried offering him alternative extension deals, so no more Carpool Karaoke.

Corden’s Carpool Karaoke with Adele has racked up over 250 million views on YouTube. His car ride with One Direction has over 189 million views. That segment was one of the biggest draws of his time as a host on the CBS series The Late Late Show. Corden was previously most known for being a co-creator on BBC’s Gavin & Stacey. Now that James Corden is quitting The Late Show, the network is looking for a brand new host. James Corden has had a mix of love and hate for hosting the CBS series The Late Late Show and starring roles in American films. Most recently, a petition was made to keep him from being cast in the film adaptation of Wicked. Corden could be returning to British television or continue furthering his career in American films and television. Carpool Karaoke could become its own series.
No matter what Corden chooses next, his hosting duties on The Late Late Show will be over by 2023.
