Tom Clancy’s XDefiant will be free-to-play. During the game’s worldwide reveal trailer, Ubisoft creative director Jason Schroeder and executive producer Mark Rubin share information about the game, saying, “This is a free-to-play, high octane shooter combining realistic gunplay with personalized classes.”

Tom Clancy’s XDefiant is scheduled to release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, but as of now, the only release date for XDefiant is an early gameplay test for PC users. However, more gameplay tests on other platforms are expected to release in the future. Players can register for updates and a chance to play an early gameplay test on the official Ubisoft website.

The last Tom Clancy title to release is Rainbow Six: Siege, the 2015 tactical shooter that remains popular today. Another Tom Clancy game titled Rainbow Six: Extraction was announced earlier this year, but has been delayed until January 2022. Although many fans have their attention on the upcoming Rainbow Six: Extraction, XDefiant has some unique draws including it being free-to-play, fast-paced, and including characters and factions from the Tom Clancy universe.

While many free-to-play shooter titles go the route of battle royale like Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and PUBG, Tom Clancy’s XDefiant will be a 6 vs. 6 multiplayer arena game. Based on the gameplay footage of classes and abilities, XDefiant looks like it could combine the ability gameplay in Overwatch with the gunplay of games like Call of Duty.

Because XDefiant will be free-to-play, players can most likely expect a paid battle pass or something similar. During the game reveal, developers say the roster of characters and factions will grow, so it may follow a similar roadmap of other free-to-play games with the release of new characters and cosmetics.
