Stadia is Google’s premier gaming platform. A console that uses cloud streaming, Stadia launched in 2019. Three years on, the platform provides access to hundreds of games, from indie projects to AAA titles. But is Google ending support for Stadia in 2022?

Is Google Stadia shutting down its service?

The answer is no—but Google has officially announced that Google Stadia will shut down on January 18, 2023, marking Stadia’s lifespan at three years. Vice president and GM of Google Stadia, Phil Harrison, details in a Google blog post why the game streaming is shutting down and the future of the team and Stadia’s resources.

Preceding this announcement were several rumors amid scaling back that Stadia would shut down, including an article from Business Insider that suggested Stadia would be a technology platform for industry partners. These include the likes of Bungie, Capcom, and Peloton, but this is now up in the with Stadia’s demise.

Harrison details that Google will refund all hardware, software, and DLC purchased through Google Stadia and that players would still have access to their games. The January 18, 2023 date seems to be chosen to give players time to finish any last play sessions, and Google estimates they will have the majority of refunds completed by mid-January.
