Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck were tight friends, and Jeff Beck’s death plunged Johnny into mourning. The English guitarist died at 78 on Tuesday, January 10, at a hospital near his home in Surrey, England. A source told People:

The famous rock and roll star died of bacterial meningitis, which he contracted suddenly. The source revealed that Jeff’s condition deteriorated rapidly in the few weeks leading to his death.

Jeff’s family confirmed his death in a statement to People on Wednesday.

The eight-time Grammy winner is survived by his wife, Sandra Beck.

Johnny said it was an honor to “play and write music” with the talented musician. He also claimed it was a privilege to call Jeff a brother in a release at the time.

Jeff also acknowledged the Sweeny Todd actor’s musical aptitude at the time. “I haven’t had another creative partner like him for ages,” he said. “He was a major force on this record.”

The I Put a Spell on You singer also expressed his anxiety that the actor would not be “taken seriously as a musician because it’s a hard thing for some people to accept that Johnny Depp can sing rock and roll.”

Jeff rose to prominence in 1965 when he took over as guitarist for The Yardbirds, replacing Eric Clapton.
