Two years ago, almost to the day, Firewatch developer Campo Santo announced their next game, In the Valley of the Gods. A few months later, news broke that Valve had acquired the studio, and fans wondered how this might impact Campo Santo’s work on their projects, and now we know.

One of Campo Santo’s co-founders, Jake Rodkin, recently sent a statement to Polygon about the status of In the Valley of the Gods. Rodkin explains that the game is officially “on hold” as the developers at Campo Santo are working on other projects at Valve. Some of these developers have begun work full-time on the recently announced Half-Life: Alyx, which is set to launch in March of next year.

Rodkin explains that “our experience in the first-person adventure genre is pretty relevant” to the development of the upcoming VR Half-Life game. Other Campo Santo developers are working on projects related to Dota Underlords and Steam, which means work on In the Valley of the Gods has been put on hold at the moment.

That said, Rodkin remains somewhat optimistic about the unfinished game. He states, “it certainly feels like a project people can and may return to. And when that happens, we’ll find an exciting way to let fans know.”

So In the Valley of the Gods may not be completely dead, but fans shouldn’t expect work on it to resume, let alone for it to launch, any time soon.
