Masahiro Sakurai, director of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros series, took to Miiverse today to unveil another new character for the upcoming fighting game.
Ike, who is a leading representative of Nintendo’s popular Fire Emblem franchise, will be making his triumphant return to the battlegrounds of Smash Bros this year when the game is released across both Wii U and 3DS platforms. Having made his smash debut in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii, Ike has proven to be a fan favourite and had been greatly requested in the months prior to this announcement. Ike is one of the main playable characters of 2005’s Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, the ninth game in the series. He is credited as being the first protagonist who is not of royal or high born descent.
With the addition of Ike, the total playable character roster for Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS now stands at an even 30. With the initial 3DS version now rumoured for a September release and the Wii U game apparently not ready until Holiday 2014, there is still plenty of time for more surprise revelations from Sakurai and his team.
Nintendo earlier announced a Super Smash Bros. tournament will be held at next month’s E3, with the action kicking off on the first day of the event.
