With all the advancements in science and technology, we’re left wondering where sports may go in the future. Popular movies have alluded to new, bloody sports. And some games and movies show a team losing more than just a simple match. But none of them have answered a much more serious question: what if aliens wanted to play against us? That’s right. This title from Milky Tea Studios shows us just what that could be like.

Hyperbrawl Tournament Gameplay

When I began the game, I half-expected an over-the-shoulder camera. But I was not surprised to see the 2.5D perspective from the sidelines. That, personally, was one of the hardest things to get used to regarding the gameplay. After adjusting to the angle of the camera, all that was left was getting familiar with the rules and goals of the Hyperbrawl Tournament.

Much like soccer, there is a goal on either side of the playing field. The main objective of the game is to land the ball inside the opponent’s goal. Teams consist of two characters, each with their own special skill. Like other sports, of course, the only way to win is to score more goals than one’s opponents. The match is presented in 3 rounds. Whoever scores the most goals during those three rounds is declared the winner. Each character on a team can kick and punch to aid them in their efforts to achieve victory. They’re also equipped with a weapon because sometimes sports gets physical.

Because my opponents could do everything I could, it made things very challenging. Just when I thought I had the opposing team on the ropes, their players would bumrush my avatars and make a steal for the ball. When I owned the ball, though, I made use of what is called “Hypercurve”. This technique allows one to literally curve the trajectory of the ball. It is useful when trying to score around an opponent or vault the ball off an object on the playing field. Hyperbrawl Tournament doesn’t hesitate to remind players how necessary this technique is when playing. I would have lost each match had I not utilized it when the situation called for it.

The Galactic Tournament

When it comes to participating in any tournament, one has to put in work. The same is true for the intergalactic sport known as the Hyperbrawl Tournament. Just like our earthly competitions, this intergalactic sport has a series of divisions and rounds. There are preliminaries, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the ever-important final round. Only by defeating every division can you become the universal champion. It is a sport that has seemingly existed for thousands of years. And those who organize it continuously search the stars for the universe’s best athletes to participate.

It isn’t just pre-programmed AI that gamers can take on either. If you want to truly challenge yourself, you can jump into online matches to take on other humans. The online portion will allow you to challenge live people vying for the title of Hyperbrawl Tournament champion. Whether or not your team succeeds at this is another matter entirely.

Where Hyperbrawl Tournament Can Improve

The game was great as a different take on the sports genre of games. While it was indeed fun, there are still ways in which it can improve. What I found odd was the lack of ability to run. In place of running, was the ability to pass the ball to your AI teammate. Changing to controlling one’s teammate could be automatic or manual. It’s understandable why there was no definitive running mechanic. The playing field is smaller than most, and a pass can be caught over a large distance. Characters could also close the distance between them and opponents with a special dash move or “magnetize” attack. Despite all that, it didn’t make me wish for a running mechanic any less. It could just be my frustration with not scoring goals speaking, though.

Even when a character had the ball, they simply walked around the field. It’s not completely game-breaking, but it is sure to find the ire of some gamers who want something more fast-paced.

Conclusion

Verdict: Hyperbrawl Tournament is a futuristic amalgam of football and American football. Characters have at their disposal a variety of satisfyingly powerful skills. Intercept a pass from your opponent or knock them out and clear the way for your teammate to score. However you choose to play, you and your friends are sure to have loads of fun competing together. Or against each other. If you’re looking for a fairly good sports game, Hyperbrawl Tournament may be for you. Just don’t go in expecting anything stunning.

Hyperbrawl Tournament is a different take on the sports genre. Instead of challenging earthly opponents, you challenge aliens who may have been playing the game for hundreds of years. Will you make it to the top as champion?
