As the streaming wars rage on, Hulu has taken steps to help assure their place in the vast digital landscape. According to a report from Deadline, Hulu is renewing their original comedy series, The Great, for a season 3. The series stars Elle Fanning and Nicolas Hoult, which is one of Hulu’s top-performing comedies.

Hulu’s The Great was created by and currently written and executive produced by Tony McNamara. It is loosely based on Catherine the Great’s rise to power in Russia during the mid 18th century. Elle Fanning leads the series as Empress Catherine II alongside her husband, Emperor Peter III, played by Nicolas Hoult. Other stars in the series include Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow.

The first two seasons of The Great have received overwhelmingly positive reviews. The first season holds a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, while the second holds an impressive score of 100%. The series holds an overall score of 94% on the Tomatometer and an 86% audience score. TV critics have specifically praised The Great‘s use of comedy and wit and its stellar cast.

The Great season 3 will pick up where the previous seasons left off. During season 2, Catherine finally takes the Russian throne for herself after staging a coup against her husband. However, Catherine desires far more than just a throne and title. She also desires to bring enlightenment to Russia, ultimately liberating it. Only time will tell if this somewhat historically accurate TV show will see Catherine achieve her goals or not.
