There are many different ways to obtain and improve your gear in WoW Dragonflight, and one of the best ways is to upgrade gear drops directly. Gear Upgrading improves item level and stats, so it is a valuable tool. However, not all gear can be upgraded. There are requirements, you see, but we happen to know everything on how to do it without a hitch. Here’s how to use the Gear Upgrading system in WoW Dragonflight.

Using the Gear Upgrading System in WoW Dragonflight

To begin the upgrading process, you’ll need to head over to the Gladiator’s Refuge, located within Valdrakken. There, you will find Corxian, the NPC you need to start upgrading. As mentioned, not all gear can be upgraded. In fact, only two types of gear can be upgraded: Mythic+ and PvP gear.

Mythic+ gear, as the name implies, can only be obtained by completing Mythic+ runs of any level. Completing runs and timing keys will reward you with a special currency called Valor. The amount of Valor you obtain depends on whether or not you time the key and how long it took. By talking to Corxian, you can select a Mythic+ item you own and use the Valor to increase its item level. Mythic+ items have 13 levels of upgrades you can apply, and each upgrade level adds +3 item level. However, there are three catches to this. First, the amount of Valor you can obtain per week is capped, and a season maximum increases every week. In addition, each upgrade requires more Valor than the last, making the upgrade process for Mythic+ gear more of a supplement method of improving your overall item level. Lastly, the level at which you can upgrade a piece of gear is locked behind your Mythic+ Rating. Even if you have the Valor points to upgrade a piece of gear, unless you meet the rating requirements, Corxian will not let you complete the process. Mythic+ rating is improved with continued Mythic+ runs.

On the other side of the spectrum, PvP gear can be upgraded in almost the same method as Mythic+ gear. There are a few differences, however. First, and most notably, the currency needed to upgrade PvP gear is called Honor. Honor is obtained from completing PvP matches. Wins grant more Honor than losses. PvP gear upgrades also tend to be capped at lvl 9 instead of 13. PvP upgrades are not locked behind a specified rating. Instead, they are locked behind PvP ranks that can be obtained through the Arena. For example, to upgrade an item level 389 piece of PvP gear to 392, you’ll need to reach the rank of Challenger 1.
