Making your own images can be really powerful and useful for creative projects. Whether you want to know what a video game character may look like as a real person or you want to create a fantasy character for your Dungeons and Dragons game, Artbreeder is a great site to use.

What is Artbreeder?

Artbreeder is an image editing and creation software tool that uses AI, user submissions, and other processes to give creators a powerful creative platform to bring a myriad of images to life. Players can create portraits of humans (more or less realistic-looking, depending on preference), fantasy characters, buildings, anime portraits, paintings, and more. All images are based on previous images and edited at the micro-level. Accounts can share their creations for other people to use as a foundation to “breed” and create other images.

How to play Artbreeder

Depending on which mode of creation you choose, there will be small differences in how to control the creation. The two most important aspects of creation to master are Edit-Genes and Crossbreed. Edit-Genes is the main hub for controlling the current image you are working on, where you can use sliders to tweak small details. Hitting Add Gene will give you to option to add custom sliders made by other creators.

Crossbreed is a tool that will allow you to mix two creations together to create a new one. Hitting Save will make a new image for you to work on. If you want to edit an image’s genes and then Crossbreed, you need to save the tweaked image, click on the post that shows at the bottom of the page, and then choose Crossbreed on that new post. Hitting the Children tab shows you which images the current project originates from, like a family tree.
